Join us virtually on October 8th @ 6:00pm to learn about powered hand tools and how the term "digging their own graves" is related to silicosis from Mark Geiger, MS, MSE, CIH, CSP:
Since their US development in the 1870s, power hand tools have become essential to industrial operations. However, their use has also been associated with increased exposures to dusts, especially silica, noise, hand-arm vibration syndrome, physical safety hazards, and repetitive motion/ergonomic stresses. Fortunately, advancing technology has led to reduced risk factors and improved productivity. A process approach to controlling hazards from powered hand tools and other hazardous equipment will be described in this presentation. If implemented correctly, we can help prevent workers from singing the Power Tool Blues.
Mark has 42 years of experience in environmental, occupational health and safety programs supporting and managing diverse industrial, laboratory and headquarters activities. Among his repertoire includes the collaboration update of the General Services Administration (GSA) (140 improved tools stocked), process for evaluation and procurement of powered hand tools, development of an SAE International Standard (AS 6228) for evaluation and procurement of power tools, and several collaborative NIOSH/DOD field studies. Mark is now retired, but continues to serve as the Volunteer Chairperson for SAE International EG1-B1 Power Tools – Productivity, Ergonomics and Safety Committee.
